Religion and Spirituality

Religion

A group of people who share a common faith and beliefs, religion can be an important part of your life. Although it is an individual choice, it is a social institution that helps shape your worldview, attitudes and actions.

Religion can include a wide range of practices, texts, organizations and worldviews. It can be both the good and the bad. Some religious practices are considered deceitful.

The true religion is a way of living. This includes learning about a belief system, participating in rituals and practices, and following ethical and moral codes. There are many religions, including Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Judaism, Hinduism and a host of other religious systems.

Although a large part of the religious experience involves outward expressions of reverence, it is the internal experience that is the real reward. For instance, the Bible lays out a number of rules and guidelines for conduct. If you follow the prescribed behavior, you will be well on your way to a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

There are many ways to go about getting closer to God. Often, these experiences involve a sense of transcendence and an acknowledgment of the presence of the divine. Other times, these activities are performed in solitude.

Having said that, it is possible to be a spiritual person without having to adhere to a set of dogma. People with an intrinsic religious orientation often have a better sense of well-being and stress management.

Spirituality also can be defined as a multi-faceted, self-directed search for meaning. Many people with this orientation have been able to overcome suffering by focusing on the present and aligning with the source.
