Relationships – Why They’re Important

A relationship is a connection that may be emotional, physical or financial between two or more people. It can be casual, as with acquaintances, or committed, as in a romantic marriage. Relationships are important because they can make us feel supported, loved and cherished, and they can add years to our lives.

A healthy relationship requires both partners to contribute to it. This includes making time for one another and communicating regularly. It also involves listening to one another without judgement and respecting their needs, desires and boundaries. It may include physical intimacy (including sex for those in romantic relationships), and for some, it may also involve supporting each other’s goals and dreams.

It’s also important to maintain connections outside of your relationship. This can help prevent feelings of jealousy when your significant other spends time with friends or family members, and it can be a great source of support during difficult times.

Many people think that healthy relationships take work, but that doesn’t have to mean “hard.” It may involve some effort and commitment, but it can be as simple as choosing to stay in touch with your partner throughout the day by phone or texting, taking a regular couple’s walk, or writing notes of appreciation for each other.

People who are close to others tend to be healthier and happier than those who are not. Relationships are the cornerstone of living a meaningful life, and when they’re nurtured, they can lead to a greater sense of happiness and well-being.
